Our top recommendations for the best summer bedding:

  • Which tog? A 2.5 to 4.5 is the ideal summer duvet tog. The lower the tog rating, the less insulation the duvet provides so it will be cooler to sleep under.
  • Which materials? Natural materials, like down, feather, cotton, linen and wool, are much more breathable and sweat wicking than synthetic bedding.
  • Why down? A high percentage down duvet provides 3-4 times more air circulation than a synthetic duvet.

What to consider when buying the best duvet for summer:

  1. What tog is a summer duvet?
  2. Summer duvet materials & breathability
  3. Summer duvet construction
  4. What is a lightweight duvet?
  5. What sizes do summer duvets come in?
  6. Washing your duvet and bedding in the summer

What tog is a summer duvet?

  • A 2.5 tog duvet is a thin duvet for summer weather and hot sleepers.
  • An all seasons duvet can be a great investment all year round, even in the summer. Two duvets, one lower tog (cooler) and one higher tog (warmer), can be easily fixed together, giving you different warmth options for each season of the year.

We offer three different All season duvet combinations, a 13.5 tog, a 11.5 tog and a 7 tog. Our 7 tog all seasons duvet is ideal for summer nights and hot sleepers, combining a 2.5 tog duvet with a 4.5 tog duvet. Our all seasons duvet comes in a lovely reusable fabric storage bag, so you can handily store one duvet during the months that you're not using it.

Summer duvet materials & breathability

The best summer duvets will help you avoid poor sleep and waking up feeling sticky and tired. As well as the tog rating, you need to consider the breathability of the summer duvet materials. A summer weight duvet with good breathability will help any moisture from sweat to escape more easily.

Natural materials are more breathable and have better sweat wicking properties than synthetic bedding, such as cotton, linen, down, feather and wool. Duvets filled with goose down provide up to four times better air circulation than synthetic duvet fillings.

Make sure your summer duvet casing as well as your summer bed linen - duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases - are 100% cotton not synthetic as cotton is both temperature regulating and sweat wicking.

Summer duvet construction

The construction of a summer weight duvet can also help you manage your body temperature as you sleep. A pocket construction, such as Box or Baffle stitched, ensures that the duvet filling is evenly distributed and doesn’t all sink down to your toes. It also gives the down duvet filling more space which increases fluffiness and breathability.

Lightweight duvets

Lighter weight duvets and bedding can help you to have a better night’s sleep if you overheat when you sleep or suffer from night sweats. A light duvet for summer can therefore be a great warm weather option. A lightweight duvet won’t weigh you down awkwardly and should help you sleep much more comfortably so they are also ideal if you have restricted movement due to age or injury or if you’ve had a recent operation.

To work out how lightweight a duvet is, check the duvet 'fill weight', which is the weight of the duvet filling. Duvet fill weight is usually measured by ‘gsm’ which means the weight of the filling within a square metre. Therefore, the lower the fill weight, the lighter the duvet. It is worth noting however, that in down or feather duvet fillings, it is 'fill power' not 'fill weight' that measures the effectiveness and quality of the insulation provided.

Down-rich duvets are a great choice as a lightweight duvet as they provide superior breathability and temperature regulation. Goose down has a larger number of fluffy filaments than duck down or feather which means it is a more lightweight duvet filling.

Read more in our guide to fill power and fill weight.

What sizes do summer duvets come in?

Summer duvets come in all the normal duvet sizes. Here are the standard UK sizes that we sell on scooms:

Do I need to wash my duvet and bedding more in the summer?

If you have the right tog summer duvet made with naturally breathable materials, such as down and cotton, then you shouldn't need to wash it more than usual during the summer months. See our guides on caring for cotton sheets and caring for your duvet.

If you have a synthetic duvet, it will trap more moisture when you sweat at night providing a breeding ground for nasties and so you may want to wash it more frequently. Remember though, that synthetic duvets made from microfibre, hollow fibre or 'soft as down', are all filled with a form of plastic which will release microplastic pollution into the water system during washing.

If you can, we recommend that you dry your duvet outside during the summer as the sunlight acts as an antibacterial force.

Make sure you wash your bed linen such as sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases once a week. See our guide to how often to change your bed linen

Our top 10 tips for sleeping well during the summer months

A low tog rating and breathable materials are the most important things to consider for the best duvet for summer weather. Fill weight and fill power are the key elements to think about if you are looking for a lightweight duvet. The best summer duvets will even help you stay cool in a heatwave!

  1. Breathable bedding - natural materials are sweat wicking and temperature regulating - choose cotton sheets, linen bedding and down duvets or wool duvets.
  2. Lower tog rating - look for a low tog rating for a lightweight summer duvet, pick a 2.5 tog to 4.5 tog duvet.
  3. Ideal room temperature - the best sleeping temperature is 17 to 18 degrees. Try shutting your curtains during the day to keep the temperature down.
  4. Air your room - keep the window open or use a fan for a cooling breeze while you sleep.
  5. Cotton nightwear - wearing cotton next to your skin allows air to circulate and will absorb any sweat.
  6. Avoid drink or food too close to bedtime - stimulating caffeine, alcohol or a big meal will all keep your body working throughout the night increasing your body temperature.
  7. Cool down before bed - a cold or warm shower will cool you down before sleep. Warm showers will trigger your body's natural cooling response.
  8. Drink water - keep a cold glass of water by your bed to sip when your mouth feels dry.
  9. Cooling tips - fill a hot water bottle with icy water or store your pyjamas or pillowcase in a cold environment for an hour before bed.
  10. Avoid body contact - sleeping too close to someone else's body heat can increase your own body temperature!

What tog is a summer duvet?

Summer duvets have lower tog ratings, ranging from a 2.5 tog duvet or 4.5 tog duvet. This means that they have less insulation and will be lighter weight.

What is a summer duvet?

A summer duvet is designed to help you sleep comfortably in warm weather. The best summer duvet should be 4.5 tog or lower so that it is less insulating, made from a naturally breathable filling like goose down and covered in a temperature regulating and sweat wicking fabric such as 100% cotton.

What is the best duvet for summer?

The best duvet for summer is a low tog and lightweight duvet made with naturally breathable, sweat wicking materials. We recommend goose down for the duvet filling and 100% cotton for the duvet casing.

What is a lightweight duvet?

A lightweight duvet shouldn't weigh you down awkwardly as you sleep so you should sleep much more comfortably in hot weather or if you have restricted movement. The lower the fill weight, the lighter the duvet. Look for the GSM of the duvet before you buy, which will tell you the weight of the filling within a square metre.

Guide to duvet tog ratings
The tog rating measures the thermal insulation of a duvet, which tells you how warm the duvet will be. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. So, you might want a lower 4.5 tog duvet for the summer, a medium 9 tog duvet for spring and autumn and a higher 13.5 tog duvet for the winter.
